Collective Ramp Event Analysis for Four Solar Farms in China's Dali Province

Oscar Lu, Engineering 2016

  • Partnered with North China Electric Power University (NCEPU)
  • Analysed power output timeseries data from 4 medium scale (30-50MW) solar farms in the Dali, Yunnan province of China.
  • Identified and characterised ‘critical collective ramp events’ experienced over the 2014-2015 period
  • Presented the results at the 2016 Asia-Pacific Solar Research Conference

  • James' project will establish a real-time operation environment for my city-wide PV simulation system
  • This will be accomplished though an allocation on the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI)

  • Shaw characterised collective PV ramp events in Brisbane, Australia
  • He was able to demonstrate the influence of east coast convective activity on distributed PV in this region

Clas (Esa) Janara, Engineering 2015

  • Esa characterises collective PV ramp events in Melbourne, Australia
  • He was able to identify several critical collective ramp events that occur over 30 & 60 minute time periods
 

Assessment of surface solar radiation projections in Australia

Lea Wollensack, Fenner School 2015

  • Lea analysed ACCESS 1.0 and 1.3 model projections in incoming solar radiation for 1980-2010, 2010-2030, 2030-2050 periods
  • She concluded that the model spatial resolution is too coarse to make confident projections

Ahmad Al-Kurdi, Engineering 2014

  • Ahmad created a database of thousands of PV systems reporting data live around Australia
  • He authored code that can keep this database up to date & research grade 
  • Made several other student projects possible through his efforts

  • These events are all well represented by NWP models, demonstrating the usefulness of meteorologists in PV forecasting

A Diffuse Fraction Model for use with PV Power Output Data

Yi (Peter) Xu, Engineering 2014

  • Using PV system power output and data from BoM radiation sites, Peter tested the ability of simple model to estimate the diffuse fraction from PV data via KPV
  • Primary finding is that a simple KPV~Kd style model allows us to estimate the diffuse fraction from PV data with equal performance to that of a pyranometer

  • The Frank Fenner building is a six-star accredited green building, the first of its kind in Australia
  • Clare analysed the modelled versus observed performance of the building
  • Primary findings are that the building uses much more energy than expected!

  • Compared pyranometer and PV system based estimations of energy generation by rooftop solar arrays in Canberra
  • Demonstrated that my KPV methodology is just as effective as pyranometer based estimates for distances less thank 5km
